The primary function of a load regulator in a photovoltaic system is to protect the battery from overloads or excessive discharges. Any installation using unforeseen loads, user intervention, optimized or infra-dimensioned (in order to minimize the initial investment), or any other characteristic that may overload or excessively discharge the battery needs a load regulator. Its lack may provoke a reduction in the service life of the battery and a reduction in the availability of the load. The systems with small, predictable and continuous loads may be designed to work with no need of regulator. If the system features an over-dimensioned accumulator and the rate of discharge is never going to be over the depth of the critical discharge, there is no need of a regulator.
